Planetary Peace Mural Project Poems for Peace and the Environmental Resource Center are hosting a Planetary Peace weekend at the ERC on Saturday and Sunday, October 18 and 19. The event is open to middle school students. Participants will learn about environmental issues that effect personal, communal, and global peace and discuss ways that as “peacemakers” they can move towards a harmonious coexistence with earth. Under the direction of artist Joe Castle, they will design and execute an on-site mural that expresses these complex issues. The aim is to bring a diverse group of children together to work towards a common goal of Planetary Peace. Poems for Peace was launched last spring by Hailey resident Lauri Bunting. The aim is to provide a means for youth to transcend racial, religious, socioeconomic, physical and intellectual differences that often create barriers. The Planetary Peace Mural Project will bolster bonds between a diverse group of local youth as they share, listen, debate, compromise and collaborate. Their connections to the earth will strengthen as they expand their knowledge of some key elements that affect the health and well being of the planet and all the life it holds. Joe Castle is not only a local sculptor and popular substitute art teacher in the local schools. A graduate of the University of Colorado in Boulder, Joe has taught art at Chestnut Hill and German Town Academies in Pennsylvania and was honored as a visiting artist at Utah State University in Logan Utah. The Mural Project will be a wonderful opportunity for children to work along side a professional artist. Lisa Huttinger, the ERC’s Education Coordinator, will facilitate the environmental discussion, helping participants recognize that there are many dimensions to each issue. The children will develop local solutions for global concerns. Rather than walking away from the weekend overwhelmed by the immensity of problems, they will feel empowered as problem-solvers and motivated to act. Planetary Peace Mural Project is free of charge and lunch is included. McClain’s is providing pizza on Saturday and KB’s is providing burritos on Sunday. Mountain Adventure Tours will provide transportation from South Valley. For full information and to register, please call Lisa Horton, ERC, at 726-4333.
