Program Director

Summary of Position

The Program Director, working closely with the Executive Director, is responsible for identifying, organizing, implementing and evaluating the ERC’s diverse education and outreach efforts (program set).  The Program Director is responsible for working with the Board and Executive Director in setting the annual programmatic goals that further the ERC’s mission.  The Program Director is also responsible for working with the Executive Director in establishing individual program budgets and coordinating with Executive Director on fundraising to determine funding support for the program set (i.e., sponsorship, general funds, grants, etc.).  The Program Director will have at least one AmeriCorps member to work on related projects and help supervise on those related projects.

 The Program Director is an exempt position, is supervised by the Executive Director, and may supervise other staff and program volunteers. The position includes health benefits and paid vacation.

Duties

  • Participates in developing program goals that further the ERC’s mission, along with the Board, Executive Director and/or Program Committee.

  • Drafts work plans to accomplish these program goals.

  • Coordinates all aspects of project planning and implementation for delegated programs, including grant-specific projects focusing on solid waste and recycling, including but not limited to:

  • Crafting and implementing community recycling outreach programs; and

  • Assisting with the development and drafting of a community solid waste plan.

  • Develops and implements marketing strategies for the ERC’s delegated programs. This includes taking a lead responsibility for coordinating all communications with the press and public such as press releases, program flyers and posters.

  • Comfortable working with the media (i.e., appearing on radio and TV programs) in representing the ERC and its differing programs.

  • Coordinates with fundraising staff members to ensure that adequate funding exists to support the programs.

  • Supervises AmeriCorps members in their involvement with the ERC’s program set.

  • Manages volunteers to assist, when necessary and appropriate, in program implementation.

  • Works with the Finance Committee and Executive Director to draft program budgets and ensure that the programs meet budgetary expectations.

  • Provides regular updates to the Board and Executive Director on the program status and development.

  • Coordinates with the Program Committee and other project-specific committees that are deemed necessary to form and manage.

  • Evaluates each program to ensure compliance with and assess value to the ERC’s mission.

  • Coordinates, in a complementary manner, with other staff members to ensure that the program set dovetails with other organizational goals, such as fundraising.

  • Works as a team to address other organizational responsibilities such as greeting visitors and answering the phone.

  • Performs other program-related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

 Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree, preferably in education or an environmentally related field or 3 years successful experience working in project management or outreach capacity.

  • Demonstrated interest and creativity in marketing and community outreach a plus.

  • Ability to deal effectively and personably with a variety of people, including members, directors, staff and the general public.

  • Excellent organizational skills.  Ability to set priorities, manage time, work under pressure and manage multiple projects/deadlines efficiently.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and address strategic priorities.  Attention to detail and ability to organize and manage diverse activities, set priorities, and remain flexible under pressure.

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with a minimum of supervision.

  • Ability to actively problem-solve using sound judgment and critical thinking.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach program courses, when necessary.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic work environment that, at times, demands flexibility.

  • Ability to use current computer technologies, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and the Internet to organize, plan and implement programs.

  • Willingness to motivate and lead other volunteers and program staff (i.e., interns.)

  • Willingness to work some weekends and odd hours to fulfill job requirements, particularly during high season.

  • Excellent sense of humor a plus.

  • Passion for the mission and goals of the Environmental Resource Center and a desire to be a team player
