FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.) Is there a recyclables drop in the city of Ketchum?

YES!  Apart from the curbside service that is available, recyclables can be taken to the Associated Brokers’ of Sun Valley drop off bin behind Starbucks in Ketchum.  Items may also be taken to the Resource Recovery Center at Ohio Gulch, south of Ketchum.

2.) What kind of plastics can we recycle?

#1 and #2 plastic bottles only (no lids) may be recycled here in the valley.  A bottle is defined as having a neck that is smaller than the container.  Examples of recyclable plastics are soda and water bottles, milk containers, laundry detergent bottles, vitamin bottles, and any bottle that has a #1 or #2 recycling symbol on the bottom of it.  Some plastics that are not accepted are cottage cheese and yogurt containers.

 3.) What can be recycled?

Currently in the valley, glass, newspaper, cardboard, magazines, junk mail, aluminum and tin cans, plastic bottles, rechargeable and alkaline batteries, car batteries, inkjet and laser toner cartridges, used oil, antifreeze, paints, yard waste, and tires are among the common items recycled.

For a complete listing, the ERC can mail, fax or email you a copy of our Recycling in the Valley brochure.

4.) Is the glass that we throw in the bin really being recycled?

YES!  For every ton of glass recovered, the taxpayer saves $19 in disposal costs and landfill space.  Recovering glass in the valley represents a special challenge due to its weight and the cost of transporting it to a major glass market area. Currently recovered glass is being put to beneficial use as a landscaping drainage and road fill, in place of virgin rock materials.

5) Why can’t we recycle plastic cups?

The recycling number on the bottom of all plastic items doesn’t tell the whole recycling story.  Even though a cup and a bottle might have the same number, the plastic resin used to make the items is actually slightly different.  Some programs can find other markets for these slightly different plastic resins, but here in the valley we have the ability to recycle plastic bottles.

6.) Who is responsible for recycling?

You are!  Each person needs to take responsibility for reducing the amount of waste generated and recycling as much as possible.  Doing so, creates and supports 10 times the jobs that a landfill does, saves on landfill space, diminishes our dependence on virgin materials such as imported oil, and reduces pollutants that contribute to global warming.

7.) Where does the recycling go?

Virtually all the recycled materials are processed through the Resource Recovery Center, where they are sorted and baled for transport to material brokers across the northwest.  These brokers, in turn, sell these materials to manufacturers who turn them into new products, such as cans, carpets, synthetic clothing, paper products, etc.

8.) Does recycling pay for itself?

Depending on market conditions, recycling here in the valley can generate significant revenues. Last year Blaine County saved nearly $23,000 by recycling.  It’s also important to remember that land-filling materials does not now and has never paid for itself.  In fact, comprehensive studies have shown that recycling programs are often cheaper than land filling materials.  Also, through recycling, American companies have saved millions and Americans have saved enough energy to provide electricity to 9 million homes each year.
